Who doesn’t love a good retelling lately?! Between Hunted and The Wish Granter ( See my review here!  I’ve enjoyed quite a few fairy tale novels lately. The genre seems to be booming all over the book community; from Booktube, to Bookstagram, to bloggers!

With the success of The Beauty and The Beast live action remake, and the upcoming live action adaptation of Mulan, I thought it would be the perfect time to curate a list of Mulan retellings! I was also inspired by the success of my past post, 5 Beauty and The Beast Retellings To Get You Through That Movie Hangover .

Mulan is personally my favorite Disney princess, she is one of the most fierce and independent. I also love how she stays true to herself, and is a force of creativity. She is always thinking outside of the box, and literally ends up saving China because of it.

When doing a google search, I found it extremely hard to find any novels, or even non-fiction that dealt with the story. So, I thought I would do some research and compile a list for you guys so you don’t have to! Please note, that some of these are kindle versions, and I have not read these personally, so I don’t know the quality to the story yet. However, I thought it would be fun to discover what is out there! I’m sure there will be so many more when the live action comes out, so I will make sure to do an updated list again before then. I hope you enjoy, and let me know in the comments below if you know of any other books about Mulan that I missed!

The great thing is, that you can read all of these right now! The only retelling that is not out yet is Flame In The Mist, a new YA Retelling out May 16th, and the one I am most excited about, BUT you can preorder it! I have both Flame in the Mist and A Court of Wings and Ruin on preorder right now, because I’m that excited for both of them. May is going to be a good month, guys!

  1. Flame In The Mist – The most up to date young adult retelling, that follows closely to the Disney original and takes place in feudal Japan.

2. The Wild Orchid: A Retelling of the Battle of Mulan (Once Upon A Time) – This one is great if you are looking for more of the romantic side of the story! Mulan disguises herself and enters into the army as a man, only to find herself conflicted in her feelings for Prince Jian. Will she share her true feelings, or hide them forever?

3. Defy- This story starts same set up and premise as Mulan if you enjoy that, but is set in England. Similar story, completely different time period, culture, and setting. Alexa has disguised herself as a man to be a part of the prince’s army.  Alexa, the prince ,and a fellow guard Damian are abducted by a sorcerer in the dead of night to find themselves in enemy territory. Will Alexa’s secret be revealed, and will there be another YA love triangle? Only time will tell..

4. Fa Mulan: The Story of A Woman Warrior- A retelling appropriate for all ages, that stays true to the original story of Mulan. If you are looking for a more classic retelling, I would read this one.

5. Mulan: Five Versions of A Chinese Classic With Related Texts- Want to read the actual legend that started it all? You’ve found the book! This book takes five different interpretations and folklore surrounding the story, and gives you a beautiful Mulan anthology.

6.  Mulan’s 7 Daughters: An Untold Story- If you are looking for a story about what possibly happened to Mulan after the Disney classic, this short novella may be perfect for you! The story talks of Mulan’s relationship with General Li Shang, and their future 7 daughters!

7. The Autobiography of Mulan (Book One of the Princess Series)- This seems like another retelling similar to The Wild Orchid in that it emphasizes the romantic aspect of the story, and was written for modern readers.

So there you have it, I hope you all enjoyed my list of Mulan retellings! Make sure to check back next week for a new post, and until then, be sure to subscribe to my newsletter below!
